RELATIVE CLAUSES 

They are clauses that add information to something that has already been said.
  
This information can be:
  1. Essential to understand the sentence__DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
          Jake is the man who plays the guitar

  • Never go separated by commas.
  • The relative pronoun can be omitted if it is not the subject of the sentence.
  • They are the most frequent. 

  2.Additional information__NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

          Jake, who lives next door, is rather strange

  • Always go separated by commas
  • The relative pronoun cannot be omitted
  • Less frequent
These clauses can refer to:
  • person-WHO/THAT (only in defining clauses)
  • object- WHICH/THAT (only in defining clauses)
  • possession- WHOSE
  • place- WHERE
  • time- WHEN
